Remote Desktop Services (RDS), known as Terminal Services (TS) in Windows Server 2008 and earlier, is one of the components of Microsoft Windows that allows a user to take control of a remote computer or virtual machine over a network connection.

Quick step by step guide to build a Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services deployment:

Please first install all Important Windows Updates.

Installing the Remote Desktop Services Roles

- Add Roles & Features
- Remote Desktop Services Installation
- Quick Start
- Session-based desktop deployment
- Check Restart the destination server automatically if required.

Wait until all role services are deployed and the member server has restarted.

Installing the Remote Desktop Services additianls:

- Add Roles & Features
- Role-based or feature-based installation
- Remote Desktop Gateway and Remote Desktop Licensing
- .NET Framework 3.5 feature and Microsoft Search services

Installing the missing Remote Desktop Services Roles:

In Server Manager click Remote Desktop Services and scroll down to the overview.
You can see the deployment is missing a RD Gateway server and a RD Licensing server.

Click on RD Gateway, choose server with RD Gateway service and click next.
Put FQDN name, usually it si like remote.company.com.au

Click on RD Licensing, choose server with RD Gateway service and click next.
Click Add and wait when Remote Desctop Licensing role toll be successfuly installed.

Configure deployment properties of Remote Desktop:

On deloyment overview click TASKS -> Edit Deployment Properties
On RD Licensing choose Licensing mode - Per User

Activate License:

From Server Manager open Tools, Terminal Services, Remote Desctop Licensing Manager
Hihtlight your server, right click, activate server
Fill the company information
Select the license program you have and put yours one
Select Product version, License type (RDS Per User CAL) and Quantaty. Click Next.
Check Server License by - Tools, Terminal Services, RD Licensing Diagniser
